So, you all know there was this big thing about a TV movie on Apple TV called 'Hala' about a Muslim hijabi girl who is basically 'freed' from her 'oppressive culture' by a white dude? Twitter had a field day about it and criticised it for continuing to support negative stereotypes of Muslims and basically being another example of Islamophobia in Hollywood. There was this whole study also about how Muslims and Islam are constantly shown in a negative light in media too. Homeland was pretty bad and that ending to BBC's Bodyguard was terrible too! So, I was thinking - what are the BEST portrayals of Muslims and Islam in media? There's got to be some.

Muslim women around the world have contributed to the society in many ways. Media portrays Muslim women in a very negative way. Media is focusing too much on the outlook of Muslim women but completely ignores their achievement. For a mater of fact Muslim women are as much liberated and successful as any other women in any society.

You are right in thinking, what we see on TV is very much negative. There are many examples of positive examples of Muslim women, however, i find that media concentrates on the 'negative' examples. Comments like 'oh she's not like the rest?' is not helpful. So that is assuming 'the rest' are majority Muslims who are 'bad'. Well, we all know that is not true! In any society there are always going to be the good and the bad. So why is there more of a focus with Muslims. Common sense tells me one negative example does not mean 'we are all the same' - what we, or shall i say the media, needs to do is focus on Muslims who are doing good (like you and I ). I want to see more Nadiya Hussain's from Bake Off, i want to see more Amal Coolney's, Dia Mirza's, Amir Khan (actor) who are activist and use their position to empower other / women, fight for women's rights, support those who are disadvantaged - all doing good who happen to be Muslim / practice what Islam teaches in supporting the vulnerable. i can go on. in summary, lets us talk about the positive muslim reps in media and shout out about it. Love that Nadiya is on mainstream TV and is producing some of her cook shows. Yass!!!!!

In the UK we've started to see more journalists/presenters who are Muslim- Fatima Manji on Channel 4, Mishal Hussain .... but for me Nadiya Hussein from the Great British Bake Off has made the most impact in quashing stereotypes of Muslim women. Absolutely luv her!
