‘The Relationship Between Instagram and Religious, Ethnic Minority Women’s Conceptualisations of Beauty’

Interested in taking part in a research project? I require volunteers to participate in online focus groups and interviews to complete the research project above, which I am conducting as part of my PhD thesis.

The above research project aims to answer the question: To what extent does religious identity moderate the conceptualisations of beauty of ethnic minority women on Instagram?

What the research will involve:

Participants will be invited to join online focus groups and interviews to discuss their assumptions, emotions, and thoughts about how beauty is represented on Instagram. The discussions will be guided by the above research question and will be supplemented by images sourced from Instagram. Focus groups will consist of between 6-8 people, while interviews will be individual. Focus groups and interviews will be conducted online, via Zoom, and will be video recorded. Results will be published in a doctoral thesis towards a PhD in English Studies and Film, Media and Journalism.

You are eligible to take part in this research if you:
o Have an Instagram account
o Are from a minority ethnic background (loosely defined by the terms Black, Asian, Middle Eastern/Arab or Mixed)
o Identify with a monotheistic religion/belief system (Christianity, Islam, and Judaism)
o Are female (or female-identifying)
o Are between 18-60 years old
o Are fluent in English (speaking and comprehension)

Time Frame: This study is looking to recruit participants from July 4, 2022 onwards. Dates for focus groups and interviews will be based on participants’ availability and arranged via e-mail.

Expenses/Payments: Participants will be entered into a prize draw for the opportunity to win an Amazon gift voucher worth £20.
