Farhan's Story | Organ donation saves lives

Dr Iram Sattar MBE (GP & MWNUK Co-Chair) shares the story of Farhan, her brother.

Farhan sadly died on Wednesday 14th December 2022 whilst on the heart transplant waiting list. He leaves behind his wife, Sira and their four young children, including one-year-old twins.

The latest figures published in NHS Blood and Transplant’s Annual Report on Ethnicity Differences in Organ Donation and Transplantation show that in 2022/23, people of Asian heritage represented 4% of deceased donors but 15% of deceased donor transplants and 19% of the transplant waiting list; while those of Black heritage represented 2% of deceased donors but 9% of deceased donor transplants and 11% of the waiting list. There is an over-representation of people of Black and Asian heritage on the donor waiting list, whilst there is an under-representation of those on the donor register. The purpose of this video is to raise awareness around this discrepancy and to help inspire at least one person to consider becoming an organ donor to help save lives.
