Everyone seems to be talking about climate change, right? You can’t turn on the telly these days without hearing about it and you can’t watch or read the news without getting the strong sense that the end of the world and humankind as we know it is almost upon us.
The planet is warming and the climate is changing, it’s true. So what does that have to do with you?
Well, we got to this crisis point because our political and economic system is built on inequality and injustice. For centuries, rich governments and corporations have been exploiting people and the planet for profit, no matter how much it harms the rest of us. It is the poorest people on our planet and communities of colour who all too often are bearing the brunt of the climate crisis. And yet, the perceived white-ness of prominent movements against climate change often inadvertently exclude the very people they seek justice for.
People of colour and marginalised communities are underrepresented in the climate justice movement. Up to now, our voices have hardly been heard.
But what can you do about this?
World leaders will meet in Glasgow in November at the global climate talks, COP26 and it’s there they will decide who is to be sacrificed, who will escape and who will make a profit out of ‘going green’. But although climate change and social justice go hand in hand, don’t expect that justice will be delivered to us by leaders or corporations because it won’t.
Only we can imagine and build the future that works for us all.
On the 6th November, movements across the world are taking action in decentralised mass mobilisations – from indigenous struggles to trade unions, from racial justice groups to youth strikers.
You and your organisation could be part of this mobilisation by attending the Birmingham rally on Saturday 6th November alongside other groups fighting for systemic change.
